Mourinho Confident Of De Gea Signing New Contract

Mourinho Confident Of De Gea Signing New Contract

Manchester United’s Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea attends a training session at the Carrington Training complex in Manchester, north west England. Lindsey Parnaby / AFP
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said Friday he is confident Spanish international goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new deal linking him long-term to Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old de Gea’s long-term future at the club has been shrouded in uncertainty, although the club this week did activate an option to extend his current contract by a year, meaning he is now signed up until June 2020.
Had that extension not been triggered, De Gea would have been free to talk to clubs outside England from January 1 and possibly sign a pre-contract agreement.
Mourinho said after Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Young Boys he wanted De Gea to stay, and he remains optimistic an agreement on the player’s will be reached.
“He wants to stay, and I want him to stay of course,” Mourinho said at Friday’s press conference.
“He’s the level of player Manchester United needs.
“Manchester United needs the best players in the world.
“The manager wants him to stay, the board wants him to stay, David wants to stay, and his agent (Jorge Mendes) wants the player to do what he thinks is right.”
Mourinho said Mendes — who is also his agent –, unlike other players’ representatives, lets his client have genuine input into the contract talks.
“He is not the kind of agent who is manipulative like others,” said Mourinho.
“His agent lets him think and decide by himself so the point is to agree on the contract and that’s just my feeling, they are going to finish well.”
De Gea joined United in 2011 and has won the fans’ player of the year award in four of the past five seasons.
For all of United’s well-publicised troubles with high-profile stars such as Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku, the form of De Gea has been magnificent for the club.
However, reports have resurfaced suggesting he could be set for a move away from Old Trafford, with Juventus emerging as rumoured suitors for his services.
De Gea, who is reportedly on a contract worth £200,000 ($255,000) a week, is aware that Sanchez agreed to a deal worth well more than double that amount when he signed on a free transfer from Arsenal at the start of the year.
United’s current indifferent form, and broader underlying problems will hardly have helped convince him to pledge the peak years of his career to the club, especially given the disparity in pay.

Sign Electoral Act Amendment now, Atiku urges Buhari

By Dirisu Yakubu
ABUJA—Presidential candidate of PDP in the 2019 elections and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law, the Electoral Act amendment, if he is really interested in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.
Atiku
Speaking at the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council yesterday in Abuja, Atiku said that signing the Electoral Act was necessary because elections were governed by laws and that good laws were required to ensure credible elections.
“Such laws constrain the behaviour of all who are involved in the electoral process, including the candidates and their supporters, security agents and the electoral umpire,” Atiku said.
He predicted that the 2019 Presidential election would be tough based on what he called the desperation  of the APC-led government to cling to power at all costs.
“We are facing an APC government that is desperate to cling to power at all costs, which means that this will be a tough Presidential election,” he added.
He said he was not surprised that the APC government was running a campaign of “personal attacks and innuendo,” which he said was caused by the party’s failure to keep its promises to Nigerians.

PDP chairman calls for the immediate resignation of INEC chairman, IGP Ibrahim Idris

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to resign immediately.
Speaking at the 83rd PDP National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja earlier today, Secondus said Mahmoud needs to resign because he has proven he is unable to conduct free, fair and credible election. On the IG of Police, Secondus said the police under the current leadership is being used as a tool to victimize anyone that is believed to be of the oposition.
Secondus at the meeting said
“We want to do this advance warning that we are lovers of democracy and peace. We want the peace of our nation; so, let them note all they have done, even in the case of Kwara and Bauchi, where we warned clearly that they announced different results.
“That will no longer be acceptable. We therefore call on the INEC leadership headed
by Prof. Yakubu to quietly resign because he does not have strong will and courage to conduct free and fair election. He should resign. We also call on the IGP to resign and go because I have never witnessed in the history of our nation, from the First Republic even in the military regime, we have never seen this kind of act and the way and manner the police force have been used by the government of APC against the people. Our people are being killed on a daily basis and as I speak with you, leaders of PDP have been earmarked to be murdered and killed.
“The country will rise to defend the values of our founding fathers, and of our democracy. We must defend. We are not afraid. If you want a nation to be rescued from hunger, killings, we must be ready.
